I myself am all for charging reasonable amounts primarily because of the reason that was mentioned about how payment brings about a sense of value. From my experience when going to free events many people don’t take it as seriously as a paid event if we’re talking 2 workshops. Let’s not compare a BBQ or social gathering to a workshop. Certain types of events justify a cost versus other’s also. I feel a general Sabat ritual held in location that has no costs and contains a potluck feast shouldn’t have a charge. Things that are peer events should only have a cost that covers location and/or materials. In the case of a workshop though yes a reasonable charge should occur. You’re giving compensation for that person sharing their years of experience and their knowledge. That deserves something. I’m even okay with degree classes having some reasonable charge. I think for my first degree my priestess had a $10 per class charge. A nominal fee that went mostly towards the drinks and snacks provided with a small amount towards herself for her time and effort. That didn’t bother me. Money is the root of problems for most people. Exceptions will always me made and other situations can always be worked out. Money isn’t inadvertently evil nor does it cause problems. Reasonable is the key word.
